Welder running a joint on the base plate of a column

Technical reference: ASME IX · AWS

Welding procedure qualification

Development and qualification of WPS, PQR and the applicable procedures, together with welder qualification to the requirements of the project. Qualification of both procedure and personnel precedes the execution of joints subject to inspection. The service is delivered to ASME Section IX and AWS, for our own projects or for third parties.

Scope

What it covers

Scope is adjusted to the requirements of each project. These are the activities we normally execute within this service.

  • Writing the WPS

Drafting the welding procedure specification for the project's material, thickness and position.

  • Procedure qualification (PQR)

Test coupon welding, mechanical testing and the qualification record that backs the WPS.

  • Welder qualification (WPQ)

Testing and certification of each welder for the procedures they will carry out on the project.

  • Welding dossier

Joint map, welder traceability per joint and a consolidated file fit for audit.

Frequently asked questions

Does the service apply to projects executed by another company?

Yes. Procedure qualification is a standalone service and is delivered for third-party projects, including remotely.

What is the schedule for qualifying a procedure?

It depends on the material and the number of essential variables. The schedule is estimated once the scope of the project's joints is reviewed.

What information is required to write a WPS?

Material and thickness, welding position, the intended process and the code the project will be inspected under. That information is enough to draft the specification.

Where are the test coupons welded?

At our workshop or at the client's facility, whichever suits the project. In either case the same mechanical testing is carried out and the record backing the procedure is issued.

Do you qualify personnel from another company?

Yes. Welder qualification (WPQ) is carried out on the client's own personnel, for the procedures those welders will execute.
